Homage to Kong tse the Wise King. After issuing a ransom in this way, perform the ritual for the pressing down of the Vampire of the Little Ones as follows. Beneath the mother’s bed dig a three-sided pit. Make the forms of the nine carnivore siblings, which are: a stone-fox, a tiger, a black bear, a brown bear, a jackal, a fox, a black dog, a leopard

Hey! At the beginning of the world ages, to rGya rje li ga then tse was born a son, a prince. The red-mouthed Vampire of the Little Ones rose. It took the form of nine predators, and bared its fangs, that eat all manner of things. The red[-mouthed] Vampire of the Little Ones said,

Note

Line 3, chung sri khas (< kha) dmar, “red-mouthed Vampire of Loss”: the epithet is especially important for our understanding of the nature of this category of vampires. To an English-speaking reader the literal translation of the term kha dmar, “red-mouthed”, may evoke a ravening carnivore, but the Tibetan term is actually an epithet of infants, whose mouths are still toothless and therefore entirely red. As the text presently makes clear, the reason why Vampires of the Little Ones prey on young things is that they find older, more developed quarry harder to eat with their soft mouths.

“If we do not eat the prince while he is young, when he has grown up he will take the throne. If we do not eat the young barley while it is still soft green grain, once it has ripened it will hurt our teeth. If we do not break the egg for the fledgling inside, once it hatches its wing-feathers will spread wide.” At that, after one month the red-mouthed Vampire of the Little Ones took the form of a stone-fox, the companion of the fox, and it brought along the black Word-Breaking Vampire. “We shall eat meat, which is [the manifestation of] stupidity,” it said.

Again, after three months, the red-mouthed Vampire of the Little Ones took the form of a black bear, and teamed up with the nine demons of greed. “We shall chew on bones, that are the [manifestation of] anger,” they said. He killed it in the mother right ear; he pressed it down in the vampire-pit with the sealed entrance, and offered its body to the gods; he imprisoned it in the vampire pit, and bound up its mouth, the mouth that eats everything. And again, after six months, that red-mouthed Vampire of the Little Ones took the form of a fox, and brought along the byur Vampire of mothers and children. They stole their lovely complexions. He killed it in the left nostril of the mother. He pressed it down in the vampire-pit with the sealed entrance, and offered its body to the gods; he imprisoned it in the vampire pit, and bound up its mouth, the mouth that eats everything. Again, after seven months, that red-mouthed Vampire of the Little Ones took the form of a black bitch, and teamed up with a black srin po demoness.  “We shall eat the heart that is inside,” they said. Again after ten months, it took the form of the nine carnivores, and he killed it in all nine of the mother’s orifices; he pressed it down in the vampire-pit with the sealed entrance, and offered its body to the gods; he imprisoned it in the vampire pit, and bound up its mouth, the mouth that eats everything. He cut it up, he finished it off. The vampire has been crushed down—do not rise again! It has been imprisoned—do not return! It has been annihilated—do not be reborn! Perform the ritual for the pressing down of the Vampire of the Little Ones in the skulls of nine kinds of animals. Cut it up, finish it off.

Just as rGya rje Li ga thon rtse killed the red-mouthed Vampire of the Little Ones at the beginning of the world-ages, so today I, the tantrist, have killed the Vampire of the Little ones that afflicted our patron. I have killed it—do not rise again!

In this way brandish the sharp weapons of the ritual priest, and cut off the heads of the dough effigies, and bury their heads beneath a path. Draw a pair of crossed vajras and crush them down by placing it at the mouth of the pit, and fill it with earth. Make a golden libation to the bodies and take them in the appropriate direction, or else take them to a crossroads. Perform a dance around them as an offering to the eight categories of gods and demons of the visible world, and summon them as witnesses that the vampire should never rise again.

The vampire of the little ones has been subjugated. The end.

After performing the subjugation, make three heaps of barley on a piece of woollen cloth; hold a white “srin-rope” in your hand and saying “I have come into the presence of the gods”, cast
